The Media Arts Network of Ontario / Réseau des arts médiatiques de l’Ontario (MANO/RAMO) and Near North Mobile Media Lab (N2M2L) are pleased to announce the program for our biennial gathering, COLD WATERS: Media Arts Symposium & Festival in North Bay, ON from June 12-15, 2019. Running simultaneously to the Cold Waters Remote Studio for Northern Ontario artists, the symposium will connect cultural workers with artists from across the region, along with funders, peers, and more.

Thursday morning Intentions, Ethics and Ideals of Disseminating Media Arts with Jennifer Smith launches the first of five morning keynotes and discussions titled MANO Mornings. Friday morning features Making and Thinking Alongside the North, in conversation with Tanya Lukin Linklater; followed by Pathfinding: A Good Way Forward with Aylan Couchie, Mitchell Ellam, Niki Little, Susanne Morrissette, Lisa Myers, and Deanna Nebenionquit. Saturday will include Indigenous Knowledge Keeping in the Digital Domain with Monique Manatch, Randy Restoule, and Richard Story; followed by Lets Talk About Race, Space and Other Dirty Things with Scott Miller Berry and Indu Vashist.
Afternoon sessions will include a wide range of workshops, discussions, and meetings including Inclusive Collaborations: How to work with Deaf Artists with Catherine McKinnon, Anti-Oppression Tools for Media Arts Organizations with Malissa Bryan, Non-hierarchical Governance with Sarah Nelson, Soundwalking with Zoe Gordon, a Mock-Jury with the Ontario Arts Council, presentations by the Canada Council for the Arts, and more.
Saturday will feature artist-talks and studio visits with Northern Ontario artists participating in the Remote Studio Sessions bringing together artists working with media based practices from across the region.
Evening programs of Northern Ontario artists begin Thursday evening with performances by Rihkee Strapp with Tejhler Leadbeater, and Jeremy Saya in collaboration with Amanda Lindenbach. Friday evening will focus on sound including works by Darren Copeland, Anyse Ducharme, Zoe Gordon, and ElizaBeth Hill. Saturday features a screening of recent Northern film and video, along with a reception and talk for Joe Wood’s exhibition ᑯᐦᐹᑌᔨᑖᑯᓯᐃᐧᐣ | kohpâteyitâkosiwin at the White Water Gallery.
Accommodations are now available for delegates for $115 for four nights. Registration from $120, includes all events, lunches, and one dinner. Carpools and shuttles available from many communities.
